Lucy Damkoehler grew up in Bernardston, Massachusetts and has been working in bakeries since she legally could. She built a successful career outside of Western Mass, working in well-known establishments like Gramercy Tavern in New York City and other places overseas and across the country. After spending 12 years in Seattle working as Regional Pastry Chef at Bon Appetit Management Company and helping to open Hot Cakes Molten Chocolate Cakery, Lucy has brought her skills and experience back to Western Mass for all of us to enjoy!

Upon the opening of Sweet Lucy’s Bakeshop, the place was instantly a hit. Currently, the business has an average 5 star rating on Google and was voted as #1 Bakery in the Recorder’s 2020 Franklin Favorites competition.

As the shop’s slogan promises, the bakeshop offers “craveable high-quality pastries” which are crafted with the best local ingredients and without unhealthy preservatives, additives, and sweeteners. Lucy bakes up classic favorites like croissants, pain au chocolat, and cherry pie. But she also whips up some unique mouth-watering creations like smore’s donuts, sweet corn and brown butter donuts, and her famous raspberry cornbread.

The next time you’re driving down Route 5 in Bernardston, be sure to stop by Sweet Lucy’s Bakeshop at 7 South Street! Follow her on Facebook for updates and to find out what Lucy is making for #donutthursday. Support These Local Maple Syrup Farms in Western Massachusetts

maple syrup sugar house massachusetts

maple syrup sugar house massachusettsSupporting Local Sugarhouses is Sweet!

While the state is still in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, sugarhouses are still boiling their sap to make delicious maple syrup. Hager’s Farm Market in Shelburne has plenty of syrup available that is made directly from their farm at Hager Bros. Farm.  Visit Hager's Farm Market located at 1232 Mohawk Trail, Shelburne Falls. Go to hagersfarmmarket.com for more information.

Davenport Maple Farm Restaurant will also be open this weekend. At the start of the year, the restaurant owners, Todd and Michelle Olanyk, were not even sure if they would be opening the restaurant this sugaring season. They made the decision one week before opening on March 6th, and will be open for dine-in and takeout Saturdays and Sundays from 8 am to 3 pm until the end of the month. Although the restaurant doesn’t have the usual amount of business as in past years, the Olanyks are pleased to see their customers happy to be there and that they are choosing to buy local maple syrup. Customers can also purchase the maple syrup during the week by calling the restaurant at 413-625-2866. You can also follow Davenport Maple Farm on Facebook at facebook.com/DavenportMaple/.

Another local favorite maple farm is Sunrise Farms, a 5th generation family-owned and operated maple farm in Colrain, Mass. Their syrup is boiled in an electrical evaporator that is offset with renewable, zero carbon solar arrays right on the farm. Plus their maple syrup is certified organic, as well as the other delicious maple products they offer such as maple cream, candy, and sugar. Sunrise Farms offers curbside pickup at 87 Thayer Road in Greenfield or right at the farm at 24 Heath Branch Road in Colrain. They also offer shipping! Call Sunrise Farms at 1 413-624-3210 to place an order. Visit their website, sunrisefarmsmaple.com, for more information and to make an appointment.

All-Inclusive, Affordable Fitness Center Opens in Greenfield

Common Ground Fitness Center

There’s a new fitness center in Greenfield that opened up at the beginning of the year! Locally owned by Eric and Hannah Mosher, the gym is called Common Ground and occupies the space that was formerly ACD Women’s Fitness, a gym that was just for women. The Moshers are taking a different approach to the center. They want the space to be all-inclusive, an environment where everyone feels comfortable to exercise and be healthy. Hence, they chose the name Common Ground.

Classes and More

Common Ground offers a variety of classes, plus personal training ,and exercise equipment. Their classes range from PiYo which is a combination of pilates and yoga, TRX, Boxing, Zumba, and more. Eric also teaches a class called Basic, where he draws on his experiences as an Army Sergeant to push his students to their limits. They plan to add spinning classes and P90X in the near future.

Affordable Rates

Another way that Common Ground allows its center to be all-inclusive, is by offering affordable rates. Eric and Hannah want to offer the lowest rates possible so that their clients feel financially comfortable. In this way, they believe they can make a difference health-wise in the community by making their fitness center accessible to all. On top of their low membership rates, they also offer low drop-in rates for non-members who want to occasionally come in.

So if you are looking for a quality, all-inclusive, affordable gym in Greenfield, stop by Eric and Hannah’s fitness center on High Street or check out their website, www.commongroundfitness.com. Common Ground Fitness is just what our community needs to start off a healthy new year.
