River Rat Canoe Race in Athol/Orange Returns After 2-Year Hiatus

River Rat Canoe Race Athol Orange MAAfter a 2-year hiatus, the Athol-Orange River Rat Race returns this Saturday, April 9th, 2022. The River Rat Race, an annual event for over 30 years, is a race of over 200 canoes in a “no-holds barred” 5.2-mile sprint down the Millers River from the Alan E. Rich Environmental Park in Athol, MA to Riverfront Park in Orange, MA.

The canoes must follow certain criteria in order to compete, which can be found under the race’s rules. All competitors can begin lining up along the river’s edge at 11:30 am on race day. The race then begins with an exciting start at 1:00 pm, when all canoes start at the same time.

The top 3 teams will receive trophies and cash awards. Competitors can also win for specific categories such as women’s teams, mixed teams, and recreational teams. The awards will be presented at 5:00 pm at the Orange Riverfront Park.

Spectators are welcome and the event will be covered live by AOTV.
