In honor of Martin Luther King Day, consider volunteering in our local community. Franklin County has a lot of wonderful organizations where you can volunteer to help make our community stronger and healthier.
Big Brothers Big Sisters Franklin County
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Franklin County is one organization which I love to support. Their mission is to create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth. In this way, they strive to help all youth achieve their full potential. They are always looking for volunteers for their Community Mentoring Program. Mentors must be over 21 years of age and will be paired up with a young person aged 6 to 18 to meet for 3 to 5 hours each month. There is also site-based mentoring, where mentors visit Northfield Mount Hermon or Deerfield Academy, as well as virtual mentoring where meetings happen via Zoom. For more information go to bbbs-fc.org/volunteer.
Racial Justice Rising
Located in Greenfield, Racial Justice Rising’s mission is to help build the movement for racial justice by contributing to a deeper understanding of systemic racism and racial justice. They organize activities which help to heal the racial divide and bring justice for people targeted by racism. Racial Justice Rising is looking for volunteers for a variety of tasks ranging from helping with grant management, to website updates, to helping with their virtual programs and more. Get in touch with Racial Justice Rising at racialjusticerising.org/volunteer.
DIAL/SELF
DIAL/SELF is another local organization which provides youth and community services. They have several services which work to provide housing for at-risk youth who may experience homelessness or sexual exploitation, as well as transitional housing for older youth who are in foster care. They also connect LGBTQ youth who are experiencing homelessness with housing opportunities. Visit dialself.org to learn more about what they do and to see how you can get involved in their mission.
ACT Volunteer Center
DIAL/SELF also partners with ACT Volunteer Center, a great resource for finding volunteer opportunities. ACT Volunteer Center works to connect people to agencies and resources to address a broad range of community needs in Franklin and Hampshire Counties. Their website database allows you to search for agencies and volunteer opportunities in your area and based on your interests.
