Whately lies on the southern border of Franklin County, north of Hampshire County and is bisected by Interstate 91. Whately has been and continues to be a mainly agricultural area with commercial crops including apples, cider, hay, maple products, tobacco, and vegetables. With so many farms around, you can find a lot of delicious, fresh fruits and vegetables. Living in Whately, you can enjoy scenic views and quiet surroundings, yet it is only 11 miles south of Greenfield and 9 miles north of Northampton.
Local Favorites
Quonquont Farm is a pick-your-own orchard and special event venue in Whately. They grow blueberries, apples, and peaches for visitors to pick themselves or purchase at their farmstand, along with other local agricultural products. They also host events and weddings in their beautifully renovated 19th century barn.
For a lovely dinner out, the Whately Inn offers fine dining at the colonial-styled inn. The Whately Inn has been hosting guests for over 50 years and is a staple of the area. Now they also offer prepared foods to order online and pick up.
The Whately Diner is another long-standing establishment in Whately. It is an old-school diner which offers classic American dining around the clock.
The Outdoors
The tri-town beach in Whately is open in the summer months for swimming and is available to local residents only. There is a sandy beach and the water is supervised by a lifeguard.
Whately also has two large natural areas for the public to visit: Whately and Mt. Esther Wildlife Management Areas. These areas are open to the public for fishing, hunting, trapping, hiking, and wildlife viewing.
