The Hilltown Youth Performing Arts Theatre runs art programs in the hilltowns of Western Massachusetts to help youth overcome any barriers in their lives which may prevent them from becoming their fullest selves. Their year round after-school program and summer spectacles, led by students, are not just about putting on great shows for the public (although attendees do enjoy their shows!). Their programs are also about enriching lives and building a supportive, creative community.
Students are taught by expert instructors, often drawn from the vibrant local arts community, who guide participants through a range of workshops, rehearsals, and performances. In the Summer Spectacle program, performers will put on an exciting traveling outdoor show at Berkshire East Mountain Resort. Attendees follow the spectacle and even ride the chairlift up and down the mountain. Performers show off their skills in trapeze, zipline, aerial fabrics, and more during these performances.
In their most recent initiative, the Recovery Theatre, young people dealing with trauma, addiction, anxiety, depression and other behavioral health challenges are exposed to the world of circus and performing arts. This program was created as a response to the statewide opioid crisis and has already helped many struggling teens to use art as a means to recovery, rather than being treated as patients. Along with learning about various art forms and theater, participants also gain a greater appreciation for nature through outdoor experiences, such as white water rafting, equine therapy, and climbing walls, all amongst the scenic backdrop of the Berkshire hills.
The Hilltown Youth Performing Arts Theatre goes beyond the development of artistic skills. Young performers experience personal growth, gaining self-esteem and a sense of belonging. They come away from these programs with not only a passion for the arts, but a greater sense of self and strength to overcome barriers in their lives, as well.
