Nourishing Western Massachusetts
Rachel's Table, a food rescue and redistribution program in Western Massachusetts, has been on a mission to alleviate hunger and reduce food waste since 1992. As a program of the Jewish Federation of Western Massachusetts, Rachel's Table has grown to become a vital resource in the fight against food insecurity in the region.
The organization's primary focus is twofold: reducing hunger and minimizing food waste. To achieve these goals, Rachel's Table employs several strategies:
1. Food Rescue and Redistribution: Rachel's Table collects surplus food from various sources and distributes it to partner agencies and those in need.
2. Farm Partnerships: The organization collaborates with local farms, such as Brookfield Farm in Amherst, to secure fresh produce donations. In July 2023 alone, Brookfield Farm contributed an impressive 1,494 pounds of food.
3. Wide-reaching Distribution: Rachel's Table delivers food to numerous locations across Western Massachusetts. For example, they have made significant contributions to the Springfield Rescue Mission and Oasis Food Pantry.
Under the leadership of Director Jodi Falk, who joined in 2019, Rachel's Table has experienced substantial growth. This expansion led to a significant milestone in 2023 when Rachel's Table became a stand-alone nonprofit organization, allowing it to broaden its reach and impact.
