Mohawk Trail Driving Tour: Deerfield, Greenfield, & Pioneer Valley

scenic drive massachusetts mohawk trailGrab a friend and some snacks for the road and hop in the car for a beautiful drive. This scenic tour explores the eastern portion of the Mohawk Trail, beginning in Greenfield, with desirable stops along the way. 

 

Greenfield to Deerfield

Start your journey with a sunrise view from Poet's Seat Tower in Greenfield. Drive east on Main Street to High Street and follow the signs to reach the tower. Return to Main Street (Route 2A) and head west, then turn left onto Route 5.

As you travel through the meadowlands of the Deerfield and Connecticut Rivers, you'll pass the site of the 1704 Deerfield Massacre. Make a stop at Historic Deerfield, a museum village featuring 13 historic houses that showcase the area's rich history and early American culture. Guided tours are available for a fee.

 

South Deerfield and Beyond

Continue south on Route 5 to South Deerfield, where you'll find the popular Yankee Candle Village. Here you can create custom candles, visit themed attractions, and browse an extensive candle selection.

 

Mount Sugarloaf and Connecticut River Valley

Turn left onto Route 116 and follow signs to Mount Sugarloaf State Reservation. The observation tower offers breathtaking views of the Connecticut River Valley.

 

Northfield and Turners Falls

Head north on Route 63 to visit the Fish Hatchery and Salmon Ladder near Montague. Continue to the Northfield Mountain Recreation & Environmental Center for riverboat cruises, hiking trails, and picnic areas.

 

Mohawk Trail and French King Bridge

Return to Route 2 (Mohawk Trail) and head west. Stop at the scenic French King Bridge for impressive views of the Connecticut River and French King Rock.

 

Turners Falls and Bernardston

Visit Turners Falls to see The Shea Theater and observe the fish ladder (seasonal). Continue west on Route 2, then north on Route 5-10 to Bernardston, home to Kringle Candle Company and its associated attractions.

 

The tour concludes by returning to Greenfield via Route 5. Throughout the journey, you'll encounter commemorative plaques, parks, and lakes perfect for rest stops or recreation.
