Welcome to another installment of our "Notice Non-Profits" series, which shines a spotlight on local organizations making a difference in their communities.
Today's post features the Franklin Land Trust (FLT), a non-profit organization in western Massachusetts that has been working tirelessly to preserve the region's natural beauty and agricultural heritage since 1987.
Who They Are
The Franklin Land Trust is dedicated to conserving farms, forests, wildlands, and other natural resources significant to the environmental quality, economy, and rural character of western Massachusetts. Founded by landscape architect Harry Dodson and building inspector Steve Judge, FLT has grown from a small, volunteer-run organization to a thriving, fully staffed non-profit.
What They Do
FLT's primary mission is to assist farmers and other landowners who want to protect their land from unwanted development. They work with families to craft conservation plans that address financial goals, family needs, and conservation visions. Over the past 34 years, FLT has helped conserve more than 34,000 acres of forests, farms, and waterways.
Key Activities
- Accepting conservation restrictions (CR) and agricultural preservation restrictions (APR) on private land
- Occasionally purchasing restrictions to protect land
- Managing conservation areas open to the public for passive recreation
- Conducting workshops and educational programs
- Engaging in invasive species control and habitat conservation efforts
Resources on Their Website
The Franklin Land Trust website (franklinlandtrust.org) offers a wealth of information for those interested in land conservation and local ecology. Some notable resources include:
- A guide to local farms and food, connecting consumers with the conserved land where their food is grown
- Information on conservation areas open to the public for hiking, fishing, birdwatching, and nature study. You can also find recreation areas in Franklin County on my website here.
- Details about their conservation efforts and success stories
The D2R2 Ride
One of FLT's most popular and successful fundraising events is the Deerfield Dirt-Road Randonnee, affectionately known as D2R2. This annual cycling event, held every August since 2005, has grown to become the largest fundraiser for the Franklin Land Trust.
About the Event
- Eight dirt-road courses ranging from a 12-mile family ride to a challenging 180K route
- Focuses on personal challenge and enjoyment rather than competition
- No prizes awarded for finishing first—just the joy of the ride
- Participants navigate through some of the most scenic and quiet roads in the region
20th Anniversary in 2025
In 2025, D2R2 will celebrate its 20th anniversary on August 23rd, promising to be an extraordinary event for cycling enthusiasts and conservation supporters alike.
