Hometown Highlights: Ashfield Trails

Ashfield Trails SignWelcome to the first post in our new Hometown Highlights series, where we shine a light on something truly special in each of our local towns. We’re kicking things off with Ashfield, Massachusetts—a picturesque town with a gem that’s been lovingly nurtured by community spirit: the Ashfield Trails.

If you’ve ever wandered through Ashfield’s woods, fields, or hills, you know the quiet magic of these landscapes. But what you may not know is that this network of scenic footpaths didn’t appear by accident—it’s the result of over two decades of grassroots work by Ashfield Trails, an all-volunteer organization dedicated to building and maintaining sustainable, non-motorized walking trails in and around the town.

Founded in 2003, Ashfield Trails has grown into a 20-mile system of trails (and counting!), thanks to the generosity of private landowners and partnerships with organizations like The Trustees of Reservations. Their long-term vision? An interconnected trail network that not only circles the town but also links with trail systems in neighboring communities. It’s a big dream, but one that’s already well underway—and it's one we all can help support.

Why Visit the Trails?

Ashfield Trails BoardwalkWhether you’re a seasoned hiker, a weekend wanderer, or someone just looking for a peaceful place to walk your dog, the Ashfield Trails have something for everyone. You’ll find trail maps and safety tips right on their website, making it easy to plan your next outing. From quiet forest paths to panoramic ridge walks, these trails offer an intimate way to explore the natural beauty of Ashfield.

Even better, the trails are family-friendly and dog-friendly—just remember to follow the simple trail etiquette: stay on the paths, leave no trace, and keep your pup leashed when needed.

How You Can Help

Ashfield Trails is not a town committee and receives no municipal funding. Every boardwalk, bridge, trail marker, and map you see out there exists because someone donated, volunteered, or both. Your support goes directly to buying essentials like chainsaw fuel, lumber, signage, and other tools needed to keep the trails safe and accessible.

Want to get involved? There are a few great ways to do so:

  • Make a donation to support trail maintenance and expansion. Ashfield Trails Volunteers

  • Volunteer your time—there’s always work to be done, and trail days are fun, community-driven events (with the added bonus of Ashfield Trail cookies for helpers!).

  • Follow Ashfield Trails on Facebook to stay up to date on work days and special events.

To sign up or learn more, you can email the team at Volunteer@AshfieldTrails.org or contact trail coordinator Phil Pless at 413-628-3959 or 413-834-5179.

Happy hiking, and stay tuned for the next town in our Hometown Highlights series!
