Hometown Highlight: Buckland's Rich History

The Buckland Historical Society

Tucked away in the beautiful hilltowns of Western Massachusetts, Buckland is a town where history isn’t just remembered — it’s celebrated. Thanks to the efforts of the Buckland Historical Society, incorporated in 1957 by a passionate group of residents, Buckland’s rich past remains alive for all to explore.

The Society operates two remarkable sites. At the Buckland Historical Society Museum (20 Upper Street), visitors can step inside a former 1855 schoolhouse, once home to lively classrooms and a bustling “Band Hall.” Today, its three floors showcase artifacts, memorabilia, and town records, offering an intimate glimpse into Buckland's past — from antique kitchen tools to historic photographs. A special exhibit on the legendary "Caged Man of Buckland" is also on the horizon!

Step Back in Time: The Wilder Homestead

Wilder HomesteadJust a few miles away, the Wilder Homestead (129 Ashfield Road) stands as a perfectly preserved 1775 saltbox house with five original fireplaces, a 1779 English barn, and a relocated shoemaker’s shop. Owned by the same family for generations before becoming part of the Society in 1981, the Homestead brings colonial life to vivid reality. Its annual Colonial Sampler event and ongoing efforts to restore the rare 18th-century barn ("Save the Barn!") showcase the community’s dedication to preserving this priceless piece of American heritage.

The Hilltown History Trail

Buckland also proudly participates in the Hilltown History Trail, a special one-day event each August when several local historical societies open their doors for free. Mark your calendar for Saturday, August 2nd, 2025 — it’s the perfect chance to hop from town to town, exploring the vibrant histories that built the beautiful hilltowns we know and love today.
