20th Annual Greenfield Harvest Supper: Local Food, Farms, and Community

The Greenfield Harvest Supper returns for its 20th year, bringing together Franklin County farms, chefs, and residents for an open-air community meal on the Greenfield Town Common. The event features a farm-to-table dinner, live music, family activities, and the Free Farmer’s Market, all highlighting the agricultural abundance of the Pioneer Valley.

Time: 4:00 – 7:30 PM
Location: Greenfield Town Common
Admission: Free — Pay What You Can

What to Expect

Each year, over 50 farms and local producers contribute fresh ingredients for the supper, which is prepared by volunteer chefs and served to more than 1,000 guests. The menu changes annually, reflecting the best of the late-summer harvest.

In addition to the meal, the Harvest Supper offers:

  • Free Farmer’s Market — open from 4:00–5:00 PM, where surplus produce is available at no cost. Local gardeners and farmers are welcome to contribute their extra fruits and vegetables.

  • Family Activities — including face painting and art-making.

  • Live Music — provided by local musicians throughout the event.

The meal is offered on a pay-what-you-can basis. Donations help cover costs and keep the tradition going.

greenfield harvest supperEvent History

The Harvest Supper began in 2005, initiated by Juanita Nelson, a long-time advocate for civil rights, peace, and sustainable local agriculture. Nelson and her husband, Wally, were early supporters of the Greenfield Farmers Market and other locally focused economic initiatives.

For Nelson, sharing locally grown food with the community was a way to strengthen local connections and promote regional self-reliance. After Wally’s passing in 2002, she worked with community members to launch the first Free Harvest Supper. The concept has since grown into one of Greenfield’s most recognized annual events.

Opportunities to Participate

The Harvest Supper is a volunteer-run event. Community members can get involved by:

  • Assisting with setup, serving, and cleanup.

  • Donating fresh produce for the Free Farmer’s Market (drop-off from 4:00–5:00 PM on event day).

  • Providing music, art activities, or other entertainment.

The event’s organizers are also collecting stories, photos, and memories from the past 20 years to mark this milestone year.
