The Art Garden in Shelburne Falls is a community-supported art-making space where people of all ages can create, learn, and connect through hands-on art experiences. For fifteen years, it has offered a welcoming, pay-what-you-can environment that lowers financial barriers so more community members can explore their creativity. Their mission centers on using art as a tool for personal expression, youth development, and community building across Franklin County and the hilltowns.

What The Art Garden Offers
The Art Garden’s core programs include Open Studio hours, teen art programs, and after-school and vacation-week sessions for children and tweens. Open Studio invites people to drop in, experiment with materials, and work at their own pace with guidance available when needed. Youth programs provide a supportive space for kids and teens to explore drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, and mixed media while building confidence and community.
Beyond weekly programs, The Art Garden organizes larger community art events such as Winter HooPla, the Hilltown Draw-Around, and art-making at regional festivals like the Green River Festival. They also run projects under “Art in Community” and “Art in Service,” partnering with local organizations and events to bring collaborative art-making into public spaces. This mix of in-studio and out-in-the-community work helps keep Shelburne Falls and the surrounding area vibrant, creative, and connected.

December Events To Know About
As part of their December offerings, The Art Garden is hosting a free Saturday Open Studio on Saturday, December 13 from 1 to 5 PM, giving community members a chance to explore the studio, use a wide range of materials, and work on self-directed projects in a relaxed, welcoming environment. This is a great low-pressure way for newcomers to see what The Art Garden is all about and for regulars to carve out dedicated creative time.
On Saturday, December 20 from 1 to 5 PM, The Art Garden will hold a Holiday Craft & Gift-Making session, where participants can create handmade gifts and seasonal crafts using the studio’s materials and guidance from teaching artists. Additional December offerings highlighted in their calendar include fiber-focused evenings, teen programs, after-school groups, and an opening reception for a community exhibit, all designed to make creativity accessible during a busy season. For the most current details on dates, times, and registration or pay-what-you-can information, visitors are encouraged to check The Art Garden’s website and social media pages.

Big News: The Art Garden Is Expanding
The Art Garden is in the midst of an exciting expansion that will quadruple its studio space while keeping operating costs manageable. After 15 years in roughly 600 square feet, this growth will allow them to welcome more children, teens, and adults, add storage for supplies, and host additional workshops, community gatherings, and large-scale art events.
This expansion is powered by a Cultural Facilities Grant of 142,000 dollars from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, which requires a one-to-one match from community fundraising. Thanks to early donors, The Art Garden has already raised more than 60 percent of that matching amount and is now turning to the wider community to help close the gap so the new space can fully come to life.

Ways To Get Involved
There are many ways for community members to support The Art Garden. Attending programs—like the free Saturday Open Studio or Holiday Craft & Gift-Making—helps sustain their pay-what-you-can model and keeps the studio buzzing with creative energy. Families can sign children and teens up for after-school and vacation programs, while adults and older youth can look for volunteer opportunities that support events and day-to-day studio operations.
Financial contributions are especially important right now as they work to meet the Cultural Facilities Grant match. Donations can be made securely online through the expansion page on their website or by mailing a check to The Art Garden, 4 Union Street, Shelburne Falls, MA 01370; as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, they provide acknowledgments for tax purposes. In addition to monetary support, The Art Garden accepts material donations—such as art supplies and reusable materials—and maintains a wishlist on their website so donors can see what is most needed. Whether someone gives time, materials, or funding, every contribution helps ensure The Art Garden continues to be a creative home for the region for years to come.
