Notice Non-Profits: The Senior Center in Shelburne Falls

The Senior Center in Shelburne Falls is a lively regional hub where older adults from Ashfield, Buckland, and Shelburne come together for connection, support, and fun in the heart of downtown. Housed on the first floor of the historic Masonic Lodge at 7 Main Street, it blends essential services with a welcoming, small-town atmosphere that encourages neighbors to age in place with dignity and community.

A welcoming West County hub

The Senior Center is part of the West County Senior Services District, serving residents aged 60+ from Ashfield, Buckland, and Shelburne, with transportation open to all nine West County towns. Open Monday through Thursday, with Fridays reserved for special programs and transportation, the Center has become a reliable gathering place for conversation, activities, and a friendly check‑in downtown.

Inside, the first-floor space of the former Masonic Lodge includes a dining room and kitchen for congregate meals and social events, plus a smaller activity room that flexes between crafts, yoga, Veterans services, and a computer lab with free Wi‑Fi. The building’s Main Street location means many participants can pair a visit with a stroll over the Bridge of Flowers, errands, or coffee in the village.

Mission and community impact

The Center’s mission is to enrich the lives of local residents as they age by building support networks, identifying needs and interests, and offering programs and services in a respectful, safe environment. That mission shows up in everything from practical help—like transportation and outreach—to low‑cost wellness classes and chances to simply laugh with friends.

In 2019, more than 1,000 people used Senior Center programs and services over 28,000 times, with thousands of meals served, wellness programs attended, outreach and health services provided, and van rides given to appointments, shopping, and social activities. Over 100 volunteers contribute more than 15,000 hours annually, supporting everything from home repairs to phone coverage and meal service, which helps stretch limited municipal and grant funding.

Programs, classes, and social life

The Senior Center calendar is packed with weekly and monthly offerings that make it easy to find a routine or try something new. Regular fitness and wellness options include yoga, tai chi, aerobics, and Healthy Bones & Balance, helping participants maintain strength, flexibility, and confidence. Social and creative programs—like knitting group, drumming, Bingo, and craft or card‑making workshops—offer low‑pressure ways to connect and share skills.

Meals are a major part of the Center’s community life, with LifePath congregate lunches, “to‑go” meals, and themed specials that often pair food with entertainment or educational presentations. Supportive offerings, including a Caregivers Support Group, Never Alone Peer Support, Memory Café, and regular foot clinics, help address some of the physical and emotional challenges of aging in a rural area.

Services that help people age in place

Beyond on‑site activities, the Senior Center coordinates outreach services, transportation, and referrals that make independent living more feasible for older adults across West County. Staff and volunteers help connect residents with resources such as health information, home repair assistance, food programs, and benefits counseling, often in collaboration with partners like LifePath and the Franklin Regional Transit Authority.

Transportation is a cornerstone: the Center’s vans provide rides for medical appointments, grocery trips, and Center programs, which is especially important in hilltown communities where distances and winter weather can pose barriers. Veterans services, legal and scam‑prevention information, and “Ask the Nurse” office hours round out a spectrum of practical support built around local needs.

Governance, funding, and how to support

The Senior Center is governed by a 12‑member Board of Directors drawn from the Councils on Aging in Ashfield, Buckland, and Shelburne, with members serving staggered three‑year terms and meeting monthly at the Center. This structure allows all three towns to share in planning, oversight, and advocacy for older residents across the district.

Community members can help sustain and expand services by donating to the Foundation, volunteering, or simply spreading the word about programs to friends and neighbors who might benefit.

Volunteer and donate

The Senior Center offers several ways for community members to get involved through giving time, talent, or financial support. These contributions help sustain transportation, meals, wellness programs, and the welcoming everyday atmosphere that so many older adults rely on.

Volunteer opportunities

Community volunteers assist with everything from meal service and special events to administrative help, friendly visits, and program support, contributing thousands of hours each year. Residents of Ashfield, Buckland, Shelburne, and neighboring hilltowns can reach out to the Center directly to learn about current needs, typical time commitments, and any training or CORI requirements.

Support through donations

Financial gifts help cover gaps not fully met by town assessments and grants, supporting program supplies, equipment, outreach, and future expansion. Donations can be directed to The Senior Center Foundation or the West County Senior Services District, and are especially impactful as the Center plans for long‑term growth in services for an aging population.

Simple ways to help

Community members can also support the Center by attending fundraising events, sharing information about programs with neighbors, or inviting older friends and family to try a class or meal. Even small actions—like driving a neighbor to an event or helping someone connect with staff about services—strengthen the network of care around local seniors.
