Fabric of Life in Shelburne is quietly doing something powerful: helping people relearn traditional skills that make daily life richer, more connected, and more creative. This 501(c)3 educational nonprofit is dedicated to preserving and passing on hands-on knowledge—from agriculture and construction to music and craft—that strengthens both individuals and communities.

Who Fabric of Life Is
Fabric of Life describes itself as an educational organization focused on traditional skills that “enrich our daily lives” and keep these practices alive for future generations. Their mission is rooted in the belief that working together to create practical things of beauty improves quality of life and helps communities thrive.
At the heart of their work are people who value learning agricultural, construction, music, craft, and hand skills in a way that connects them to the natural world and to one another. They emphasize lifelong learning and a deep respect for the culture, identity, and knowledge of all nations, peoples, and generations.
Programs and Events

Fabric of Life offers programs that range from in-person events at their Shelburne farmhouse to larger community gatherings in nearby halls. Their events include concerts, seasonal music sessions, and workshops centered around traditional skills such as weaving, basket making, orchard pruning, natural dyeing, and music.
Many of these activities unfold at their Bassett Road location in Shelburne, a few miles east of Shelburne Falls village, creating a rural setting that suits their focus on hands-on learning and connection to the land. Together, these programs invite people of different ages and experience levels to learn, practice, and share skills that might otherwise be lost.
Fireside Orchestra Sessions: February 22 & March 22

One of Fabric of Life’s most inviting offerings this season is the Fireside Orchestra series, taking place in two sessions: February 22, 2026 (Session I) and March 22, 2026 (Session II). These gatherings highlight the role that dance music plays in community life, bringing joy to those who play, listen, and dance.
During these sessions, musicians gather in the Fabric of Life farmhouse living room to play by the wood stove, creating a cozy, informal setting that makes it easy to participate. Led by musician and director Eveline MacDougall, participants learn and practice an eclectic mix of dance tunes over the two Sundays, building skills and confidence while making music together.
The February and March sessions are designed as a progression: learn and deepen a shared repertoire across both dates, then come back in April for a review and a community contra dance at the Buckland Public Hall. It’s an accessible way for local musicians—at various levels—to step into playing for dances, supported by a welcoming ensemble and an experienced leader.
For residents of Shelburne Falls and the surrounding hilltowns, the Fireside Orchestra offers a chance not only to grow as musicians, but also to be part of a living tradition of social dance and community music-making. Registration for these sessions is set to open soon, and Fabric of Life invites interested community members to stay tuned through their newsletter for updates.
Virtual Workshops

Alongside in-person events, Fabric of Life also offers virtual workshops that open their mission to a wider audience. These online offerings extend their focus on traditional skills—such as textile work and related handcrafts—into formats that participants can join from home.
Virtual workshops allow people who may not be able to travel to Shelburne to learn at their own pace and still connect with a community of makers and learners. For local residents, they provide a flexible way to deepen skills between in-person events or explore new topics that complement Fabric of Life’s on-site programs.
How to Support Fabric of Life

Fabric of Life’s work is sustained by a combination of community participation and financial support. As a nonprofit, they rely on donations to continue offering educational programs that preserve traditional skills like weaving, basket making, natural dyeing, music, and more.
There are several meaningful ways community members can support their mission:
-
Attend events such as the February 22 and March 22 Fireside Orchestra sessions, concerts, or seasonal gatherings, helping keep live, traditional music active in West County.
-
Enroll in virtual workshops to learn a new skill while supporting their educational work.
-
Make a tax-deductible donation through their online donation page, knowing that funds go directly toward preserving and teaching traditional skills for future generations.
Fabric of Life is one of the organizations that makes the Shelburne Falls area special: it brings people together to learn, create, and celebrate traditions that anchor community life. Whether through participation in programs or a financial contribution, supporting Fabric of Life is a concrete way to invest in the cultural and creative health of the region.
