Greenfield Bee Fest 2026: A Celebration of the Father of Modern Bee-Keeping in Greenfield, MA

Greenfield Bee Fest returns on Saturday, May 16, 2026, as a free, family-friendly celebration of bees, pollinators, and Greenfield’s local heritage.

Festival history

Bee Fest began in spring 2010, when Second Congregational Church launched it to mark the 200th birthday of Lorenzo Langstroth, the “Father of Modern Beekeeping.” The event was created to honor Langstroth’s Greenfield ties and to raise awareness about the importance of honeybees and pollinators.

Langstroth served as pastor at Second Congregational Church from 1843 to 1848 and later invented the modern moveable-frame beehive, built around his discovery of “bee space.” His work transformed beekeeping worldwide, and Bee Fest keeps that legacy visible through public celebration and education.

Over time, the festival has grown beyond a church-centered observance into a city-wide community event. It now draws participation from local organizations, artists, beekeepers, businesses, and environmental advocates, all focused on pollinator health and stewardship.

This year’s schedule

The 2026 festival is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 16, with free family activities throughout the day. Some highlights include a book-sharing activity at 9:30 a.m. and a free concert at noon.

Activities include kids’ arts and pollinator crafts, honey bee cookies, a new bee sculpture unveiling, a bee bazaar with a silent auction, a pollinator parade, and lunch options for attendees. The event also includes performances, lectures, music, costumes, and hands-on learning about bees and other pollinators.

BeeFest is a community celebration where attendees are encouraged to wander between activities, join the parade, and take part in educational and creative stations.

Visitor information

Festival-goers should plan for an all-day visit, since the event runs from morning into late afternoon. The festival is free and family-friendly, making it accessible for children and adults alike.

The celebration is centered in downtown Greenfield and the historic town common area, with activities traditionally spread around the church, Court Square, the farmers market, and nearby locations. That means comfortable walking shoes are a good idea, along with a little time to explore the different stops.

Why it matters

Bee Fest is more than a local festival; it is a public reminder that pollinators are essential to food systems and healthy ecosystems. The organizers emphasize that honeybees help sustain a large share of flowering plants and a significant portion of the human food supply.

The event also connects celebration with action by promoting pollinator-friendly gardening, reduced pesticide use, habitat creation, and community awareness. That mix of fun and practical stewardship has helped Bee Fest remain a meaningful Greenfield tradition.

Bee Fest is where Greenfield’s past and future meet: Langstroth’s scientific legacy, the city’s downtown energy, and today’s focus on pollinator conservation all come together in one spring celebration. The result is a festival that feels both festive and purposeful, with enough variety to attract families, history lovers, gardeners, and anyone curious about bees.
