Notice Non-Profits: Growing the Next Generation Through the Friends of HAY Program

Education doesn't have to be confined to the classroom. At Hawlemont Regional Elementary School, students learn by planting gardens, caring for farm animals, exploring nature, and discovering where food comes from through the school's unique Hawlemont, Agriculture, and You (HAY) program.

As part of our Notice Non-Profits blog series, we're highlighting the Friends of HAY, a dedicated volunteer organization that helps ensure this one-of-a-kind agricultural education program continues to thrive for generations of students.

What Is the HAY Program?

The Hawlemont, Agriculture, and You (HAY) program gives students hands-on learning experiences that connect traditional academics with agriculture, environmental stewardship, and community.

Rather than simply reading about science, ecosystems, or nutrition in a textbook, students have the opportunity to experience these lessons firsthand. Whether they're caring for animals, working in the garden, or learning about sustainable agriculture, HAY helps children build practical skills while fostering curiosity, responsibility, and a lifelong appreciation for the natural world.

It's an innovative approach to education that reflects the agricultural heritage of Western Massachusetts while preparing students to become thoughtful stewards of their communities and the environment.

Supporting a Truly Unique Program

The Friends of HAY exists to support the sustainability and continued growth of the HAY program through both financial contributions and volunteer involvement.

Working alongside Hawlemont's teachers and administrators, the organization helps meet program needs that go beyond the school's regular budget. Their mission is simple: provide the resources, labor, and community support needed to keep this extraordinary educational program flourishing.

From maintaining facilities to supporting classroom projects, Friends of HAY demonstrates how a community can come together to invest in its youngest learners.

How Volunteers Make a Difference

One of the greatest strengths of Friends of HAY is the wide variety of ways community members can contribute. Whether someone has construction experience, enjoys gardening, has farming knowledge, or simply wants to lend a helping hand, there are opportunities to get involved.

Volunteers assist with projects such as:

  • Completing classroom and staff wish-list items

  • Coordinating repairs to the barn and other agricultural facilities

  • Building raised garden beds, storage areas, and other infrastructure improvements

  • Supporting the care and well-being of farm animals

  • Providing food, supplies, or educational resources for the animals

  • Sharing educational programs and agricultural expertise with students

  • Assisting with fundraising and grant writing

  • Helping with community outreach and public relations

  • Supporting social media, website updates, and promotional materials

  • Coordinating volunteers and tracking donated materials and services

  • Researching equipment and other resources to strengthen the program

Every contribution—whether it's time, expertise, materials, or financial support—helps create meaningful learning experiences for Hawlemont students.

More Than Agriculture

While agriculture is at the heart of the HAY program, the lessons students learn extend far beyond farming.

By caring for animals, growing food, solving real-world problems, and working together on projects, students develop responsibility, teamwork, critical thinking, and confidence. They also gain a deeper understanding of sustainability, healthy food systems, and the importance of caring for the environment.

These are skills and values that will benefit them throughout their lives, no matter what career path they ultimately choose.

Investing in the Future

Programs like Hawlemont, Agriculture, and You remind us that some of the most meaningful education happens when students can roll up their sleeves, ask questions, and learn by doing.

Thanks to the dedication of the Friends of HAY, Hawlemont students continue to have access to experiences that connect classroom learning with the natural world, agriculture, and their local community.

As a volunteer-driven nonprofit, Friends of HAY demonstrates the power of community involvement in education. By supporting the program—whether through volunteering, donations, or sharing its mission—you help ensure that future generations of students can continue learning, growing, and thriving both inside and outside the classroom.
