The Turners Falls Fishway is now open for viewing until June 12th! Witness the spectacular journey of the anadromous fish in the Connecticut River, as they make their spring migration upstream. Anadromous fish such as American shad, sea lamprey, and others, are born in freshwater, mature in the ocean, and return to freshwater to spawn.
The Turners Falls Fishway, also known as Fish Ladder, helps these fish make their migration back to freshwater to spawn by giving them a path to surpass the Turners Falls dam. The Fish Ladder consists of a series of rising pools, which allows the fish to swim from pool to pool until they reach the water above the dam.
Underwater viewing windows allow visitors to see for themselves the fish migration. The fishway is also staffed by friendly and knowledgeable guides who are happy to share information about the fish and restoration efforts.
Viewing hours are Wednesday through Sunday 9 am to 5 pm from May 14th to June 12th, 2022. Admission is free. The Fish Ladder is located at 15 First Street, Turners Falls, MA. Be sure to also stop by the Turners Falls Visitor Center, next to the Turners Falls Bike Path, as well as Unity Park picnic area on the shores of the Connecticut River. Turners Falls also offers a variety of shops and eateries to enjoy.
