Montague is a diverse area that is rich in history and culture that includes more than 10,000 years of early Native American habitation, as well as the Colonial and Industrial history that is embodied in the National Historic Register Districts of Montague Center and Turners Falls – a planned industrial community.

The Town’s landscape, 31.5 square miles, is a rare combination of rolling hills, fertile farmlands, historic mills and residential villages. It is a thriving town of 8,580 people that offers a unique mixture of business and industrial opportunities, easily accessible to Route 2 and Interstate 91 and only 20 minutes north of Amherst. Montague is also perfectly situated near canoeing, hiking and biking opportunities, including the Turners Falls Bikeway.

The Town prides itself on a lively arts community and convenient access to the cultural resources of the “Five College Area”. The Town's public arts program known as, RiverCulture, promotes arts/culture and the creative economy of Montague.   The five villages that are part of Montague are Turners Falls, Millers Falls, Lake Pleasant,  Montague Center and Montague City.

The town offices of Montague are located in Turners Falls, the most populated and industrialized section of Montague.

Great Falls Discovery Center, a natural history museum for the Connecticut River which also hosts monthly live music and located in Turners Falls.  

Turners Falls Municipal Airport is recognized as an integral component of the transportation infrastructure of the Northern Tier of Massachusetts.  A corporate and general aviation facility, an access for tourism and an educational resource in support of the region’s corporate and industrial base while increasing the Airport’s self-sufficiency, maximizing safety for the Airport users and neighbors and minimizing adverse environmental impacts.

Fish Ladder, operated by FirstLight Power, gives viewers a chance to watch anadromous fish such as shad as they make their journey up the Connecticut River each spring.

Bitzer Fish Hatchery is operated by the state Division of Fisheries and Wildlife and raises trout for stocking throughout the state.

The Shea Theater, an old movie house turned center for performing arts center. The Shea has 330 seats and is the perfect venue to encourage the growing local arts scene. 

Every year, Montague hosts several festivals, fairs, and other special events. The Mug Race, a 5.5-miler is part of Montague Old Home Days in August, which also has games, dancers, music, craft vendors, food, and a quilt show. Another event in August, the Pocumtuck Homelands Festival is a celebration of Native American art, music, and culture. In October is the Falls Festival which features music, fire dances, vendors and more!  Mutton and Mead Medieval Festival, brings together theater, fun, food, and entertainment with a medieval flair. It is a day for everyone: kids, teens, and adults alike. Come in costume or come as you are, and enjoy the festival!

Carnegie Library, on Avenue A in Turners Falls, has an "Artifacts Loft" that features a small exhibit, including an early Indian arrowhead collection, local memorabilia and relics from the Revolutionary War through World War II.

In the nice weather, locals love to take their bikes along the Canalside Rail Trail. At almost four miles long, this bike trail offers beautiful views of the Connecticut River and stretches from Turners Falls to Deerfield. The trail’s terminus is at Unity Park. This award-winning park located in Turners Falls by the river has a playground, volley ball and basketball courts, a variety of gardens, and a paved walking path with outdoor fitness stations.

Dry Hill Loop - Experience this 6.4-mile loop trail near Montague, considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 3 hours to complete. This trail is great for hiking, and it's unlikely you'll encounter many other people while exploring.

Montague Plains consist of 1,500-acre state wildlife refuge and unique ecological area, operated by the Massachusetts Department of Fisheries and Wildlife. The "Plains" are a rare pine barren, which supports habitat for many rare plants and animals.

Local Favorites

The Montague Bookmill is a used bookstore housed in an 1842 gristmill, set on the banks of the Sawmill River located in Montague Center.  Also part of the bookmill is the Sawmill River Arts Gallery.  It features a variety of exceptional fine art and handmade goods, in price ranges that appeal to gift givers and art collectors alike. Work includes jewelry, paintings (originals and reproductions), photography, pottery, gourds, collage, note cards, hooked rugs, wearable fiber art, as well as creations in wood and metal. 

Loot - Industrial artifact and handmade goods emporium located downtown Turners Falls, it's a fun place to shop!

Rustic Romance - People travel afar to visit this gem of store located in downtown Millers Falls.  Antiques, vintage items, home decor is a shopping paradise for everyone who loves decorating, collecting, and discovering. 

Black Cow Burger Bar - located in downtown Turners Falls is a family-friendly restaurant where you can enjoy a wide selection of burgers, milkshakes, vegetarian options, craft beer and fresh, creative cocktails. In homage to the previous candy shop, we have a vintage candy case filled with delicious chocolates and candies.

The Rendezvous a local favorite in downtown Turners Falls.  Food and drink specials and a rotating beer selection and all your usual favorites.  

Harvey's Restaurant and Cocktail Lounge - Great place to hang out with friends and have a bite to eat and cocktail. 

North Village Smokehouse is located in the Millers Falls area of Montague. Authentic Texas pit-style BBQ using prime a meat and smoke with wood only. Serve on their very own BBQ sauce the very dayt they smoke it creating most flavorful southern sides.  Cocktails and beer available. 

Brick and Feather Brewery are brewed on a manual 7-barrel system, mostly by hand, they work meticulously to produce beers meeting the highest standards of quality and consistency. The tasting room crew is incredibly dedicated and passionate about what we do here, and are always happy to chat with interested beer lovers!  Taproom and outdoor seating is open. 

The Country Creemee - Best place around for ice cream located on the corner of Avenue A and Second Street. They have a wide vaiety of ice cream and make great sundaes!
