Montague

Montague
Montague is another cultural hub of Franklin County. North of Leverett, it is composed of five villages: Montague Center, Montague City, Turners Falls, Millers Falls, and Lake Pleasant. To the west of Montague is the Connecticut River, where a dam and canal were built to provide cheap power for mills in the 1800s. Today, the dam in Turners Falls has a fish ladder, which allows fish to swim upstream to spawn. A viewing facility allows visitors to watch the fish climb a series of ladders to overcome the dam.
Montague is bordered by Greenfield to the northwest, Deerfield to the west, Leverett to the south, and Wendell to the east. MA Route 2 runs just north of Montague and MA Routes 47 and 63 run north to south through the town.
Town/Cultural Events
Every year, Montague hosts several festivals, fairs, and other special events. The Mug Race, a 5.5-miler is part of Montague Old Home Days in August, which also has games, dancers, music, craft vendors, food, and a quilt show. Another event in August, the Pocumtuck Homelands Festival is a celebration of Native American art, music, and culture. In October is the , which features Jack-O-Lanterns, music, fire dances, and a beer tent.
The Outdoors
In the nice weather, locals love to take their bikes along the Canalside Rail Trail. At almost four miles long, this bike trail offers beautiful views of the Connecticut River and stretches from Turners Falls to Deerfield. The trail’s terminus is at Unity Park. This award-winning park located in Turners Falls by the river has a playground, volley ball and basketball courts, a variety of gardens, and a paved walking path with outdoor fitness stations.
Local Favorites
Montague has many local favorite shops and restaurants. The Montague Bookmill, which overlooks the Sawmill River is a small grouping of shops including a used bookstore, bar and café, restaurant, music and video store, and art shops. Its slogan, “Books you don’t need in place you can’t find,” speaks to its elusive and dreamlike nature.
Turners Falls
The town offices of Montague are located in Turners Falls, the most populated and industrialized section of Montague, and location of the Turners Falls Municipal Airport. The Shea Theater, an old movie house turned center for performing arts and the Great Falls Discovery Center, a natural history museum for the Connecticut River which also hosts monthly live music, are also in Turners Falls. Plus, a variety of shops and restaurants comprise the center of town.
