In the picturesque hills of western Massachusetts is Conway, a charming town that captivates both residents and visitors alike. This small community of just over 1,800 people offers a perfect blend of rural tranquility and rich history, making it an ideal place to call home or explore for a day trip.
A Town Steeped in History
Conway's roots date back to the 18th century, when it was once fueled by the startup of sawmills. By the mid-1800s, the citizens of Conway were working hard toward rapid development of the manufacturing industry. Most factories were located along the South River, the main source of waterpower in town. In the midst of the industrial boom of the nineteenth century, many farms were abandoned leaving pastures and fields to be reclaimed once again by forest. Early in the 20th century, the manufacturing industry went into decline, with many factories going out of business.
Today, Conway boasts a beautiful rural setting, where residents can enjoy time outdoors, but still have the convenience of the highway to access nearby towns and cities such as Greenfield and Northampton.
Conway’s historical significance is carefully preserved by the Conway Historical Society. Founded in 1973, this dedicated group of volunteers works tirelessly to protect and showcase the town's heritage. Visitors can explore the society's museum, which houses a fascinating collection of Conway artifacts and records.
Natural Beauty and Recreation
One of Conway's main attractions is its stunning natural landscape. The town is surrounded by lush forests, rolling hills, and pristine streams, providing ample opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts. Residents and visitors alike enjoy hiking and nature walks in the nearby Conway and South River State Forests, fishing in the South River, and taking scenic drives along winding country roads.
In winter, the area transforms into a wonderland for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. The Conway Snowmobile Club has over 120 miles of trails to enjoy which connect to five other clubs/towns.
