Feature Friday: Where We Create Quilt Shop, Classes & Retreat

Tucked away in the quiet charm of Bernardston, Massachusetts, Where We Create is easy to mistake for a traditional quilt shop. But spend even a few minutes talking to owner Donna Giard —or better yet, walk through the doors—and it becomes clear: this is something much deeper.

It’s not just about fabric, patterns, or sewing machines. It’s about people.

A Space That Grew Into Something Bigger

When Donna opened Where We Create on June 29, 2024, she had a vision: a warm, welcoming place where people could gather and create. What she didn’t expect was just how quickly that vision would take on a life of its own.

“It got bigger faster than I thought,” she shared.

What started as a shop has become a thriving, self-sustaining community. Customers didn’t just show up—they stayed, connected, and began contributing in ways Donna never anticipated. Some help cut fabric kits before settling into their own projects. Others offer guidance to beginners. Everyone, in their own way, pitches in.

“It’s amazing how many people truly appreciate that we’re here,” Donna said.

A Creative Hub Without Judgment

At the heart of Where We Create is a simple but powerful idea: everyone belongs.

While quilting is the centerpiece, it’s far from the only craft welcome here. Visitors knit, cross-stitch, crochet—or simply sit and soak in the atmosphere. Some come to chat and laugh; others slip on headphones and quietly work.

“There’s no judgment,” one regular shared. “Only encouragement.”

There are no assigned seats, no cliques, no pressure. Whether you’re a seasoned quilter or someone who’s never touched a sewing machine, you’ll find yourself welcomed—and likely helped along the way.

The Magic of Open Sew

If there’s one event that captures the spirit of Where We Create, it’s the weekly Open Sew.

This donation-based gathering invites people to bring whatever project they’re working on and create alongside others. The room fills with long tables, cutting mats, rulers, irons—and most importantly, conversation.

“It’s fun to see what everybody comes up with,” Donna said.

What makes Open Sew special isn’t just the creativity—it’s the collaboration. If someone gets stuck, another person jumps in to help. If someone finishes a quilt, the whole room celebrates.

It’s equal parts workshop, social hour, and support group.

Learning Made Simple (and Fun)

Many people assume quilting is complicated. Donna is quick to challenge that idea.

“It’s actually really easy,” she said.

Where We Create offers a four-week “Learn to Quilt” class designed for complete beginners. By the end, participants walk away with a finished quilt—something many never imagined they could create.

To make things even more approachable, the shop offers thoughtfully prepared kits, with fabrics and colors already selected. For those who feel overwhelmed by choices, it’s a gentle and encouraging entry point into the craft.

And for those ready to go further, guest instructors regularly lead workshops—like an upcoming class taught by a talented quilter visiting from Connecticut. Classes fill quickly, a testament to the growing demand and enthusiasm.

Retreats, Shop Hops, and a Destination Experience

Where We Create isn’t just a place to drop in—it’s becoming a destination.

Upstairs, Donna has created cozy accommodations with three bedrooms, each designed to host small groups. Quilters travel from out of state to stay, sew, and spend uninterrupted time doing what they love.

“These retreats are really special,” Donna said. “Most of them just sit here and quilt all day—and they love it.”

The shop also participates in regional “shop hops,” drawing visitors from across New England and New York during peak seasons. For many, it’s a highlight of their quilting calendar.

A Place to Heal, Connect, and Belong

What truly sets Where We Create apart can’t be found on a website or in a class listing.

It’s the stories.

There’s the woman recovering from health issues who found patience and kindness here when she wasn’t getting it elsewhere. Another customer, navigating serious health challenges in her family, described the shop as the place where she finally found a community.

Donna sees it every day—the shift in people when they walk through the door versus when they leave. “They come in stressed,” she said. “And they leave calm. This is their happy place.”

There’s something almost meditative about the experience: the feel of high-quality fabric, the rhythm of stitching, the shared silence or laughter. It’s creative, yes—but it’s also deeply restorative.

Built on Care—and a Little Faith

For Donna, Where We Create is more than a business. It’s personal.

After years of caring for her parents, she sees this chapter as a gift—an opportunity to do something meaningful for herself while still caring for others.

“It’s a give and take,” she said. “It’s not one-sided.”

She describes the atmosphere simply: a feeling of acceptance, of people genuinely caring for one another. Whether it’s helping with a project, offering encouragement, or even pausing to support someone going through a hard time, that care is woven into everything the shop does.

More Than a Quilt Shop

Yes, Where We Create offers fabric, sewing machines, classes, and supplies. Yes, it has big worktables, tools, and even a couple of friendly (and occasionally noisy) standard poodles.

But what people come back for—week after week—is something harder to define.

It’s the laughter on a busy Thursday.
The quiet focus of a Monday group.
The excitement of a finished quilt.
The comfort of being seen, heard, and welcomed exactly as you are.

In a world where connection can feel increasingly rare, Where We Create is a reminder of what’s possible when people come together with open hands—and open hearts.

Planning a visit?
Check out upcoming classes, events, and Open Sew times on their website, wherewecreate.net, or Facebook page—and be sure to sign up early. Whether you’re a lifelong quilter or just curious to try, you’ll find more than a craft here.

You’ll find your people.
