For this week’s Featured Friday, we’re highlighting The Blue Rock Restaurant & Bar, a casual fine dining restaurant in the heart of Shelburne Falls. Located at 1 Ashfield Street, The Blue Rock overlooks the Deerfield River and offers views of the iconic Bridge of Flowers, making it a memorable spot to enjoy a meal while visiting the village.

A Menu That Keeps Things Interesting

Owner and ChefcChris Ramirez brings influences from his Mexican heritage, California Pacific Rim cuisine, French cooking, and Asian cuisine to The Blue Rock's ever-changing menu. The result is a New American fusion approach that emphasizes fresh, locally available ingredients from small farms and other sustainable sources.

Because the restaurant focuses on seasonal and sustainable ingredients, the menu changes regularly. Recent offerings have included everything from hand-cut fries, salads, mussels, and burgers to Massaman curry, tofu and vegetable dishes, steak, and coffee-rubbed ribs. There are also vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options available among the rotating selections.

Dining with a View of the Deerfield River

One of the things that makes The Blue Rock especially unique is its location. Nestled in Shelburne Falls overlooking the Deerfield River and the Bridge of Flowers, it's an inviting place to stop after exploring the village, spending time on the river, or enjoying a hike in the area. The restaurant describes its food as high-end while keeping the atmosphere and dress code casual.

Sustainability Matters at The Blue Rock

Since opening in 2010, The Blue Rock has made lowering its environmental impact an important part of its mission. The restaurant focuses on sourcing produce, meat, poultry, and fish from farms, ranches, and fisheries guided by sustainability principles. Its commitment to changing the menu also allows the restaurant to work with ingredients that are seasonally and sustainably available.

The Blue Rock also composts its waste and uses biodegradable to-go bags, containers, and straws. According to the restaurant, these efforts mean that at the end of a typical night, it often produces only about half a bag of trash. Its beverage offerings also include a focus on North American microbrewed beers, particularly those from the Northeast.

Supporting World Central Kitchen

The Blue Rock also uses its platform to support World Central Kitchen, the nonprofit organization that provides meals to people affected by humanitarian crises and natural disasters. The restaurant's website shares information about World Central Kitchen's emergency food relief efforts and provides a way for visitors to support its work.
