Barnfest Returns to Shelburne for a Day of Traditional Skills, Music, and Community

On Saturday, October 10, 2026, Fabric of Life will welcome the community to its property on Bassett Road in Shelburne for Barnfest, its biggest community event and fundraiser of the year. The event begins at noon and continues into the evening, bringing together local artisans, musicians, families, and anyone interested in learning traditional crafts and skills.

Held at 80 Bassett Road, Barnfest offers a unique opportunity to experience hands-on demonstrations, workshops, live music, children's activities, a community supper, and dancing in a welcoming setting. All are welcome to attend.

A Day Full of Hands-On Activities

Barnfest is designed to be more than a festival where visitors simply watch demonstrations. Many of the activities encourage attendees to try something new and get involved.

Throughout the afternoon, visitors can try weaving and block printing, learn about needle felting and quilting, join a spinning circle, or learn how to sharpen and maintain woodworking tools. There will also be demonstrations of traditional and agricultural skills, including hand-shearing Icelandic sheep, goat milking and soap making, and working oxen demonstrations.

Children will have their own activity area, while the Shelburne Fire Department will offer its popular hose-down house and fire truck experience. Visitors can also see a portable sawmill and meet Shetland sheep.

For those interested in music, Barnfest offers opportunities to participate as well as listen. Mini-workshops include beginner and intermediate fiddle sessions and beginner dumbek drumming. Afternoon programming includes a variety of musical performances and jams, followed by an evening of dancing and live music.

Community Supper and Evening Entertainment

At 5 p.m., Barnfest will pause for its annual Community Supper, served in partnership with Stone Soup Café. Much of the meal's food is donated by local farms and bakers, and dinner tickets are offered on a sliding scale of $10 to $25.

After dinner, the celebration continues with more live music, singing, jams, and dancing. The evening lineup includes a variety of performers and groups, with an All Comers Band Contra Dance offering an opportunity for guests to get out on the dance floor.

About Fabric of Life

Barnfest reflects the mission of its host organization, Fabric of Life, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit educational organization based in Shelburne. The organization is dedicated to preserving and passing on traditional knowledge and skills that enrich everyday life.

Fabric of Life aims to help traditional skills flourish in the modern world by making educational opportunities available to future generations. Its programs explore areas including crafts, music, dance, agriculture, and forestry, with an emphasis on learning through hands-on experiences and community participation.

The organization's philosophy extends beyond simply preserving techniques from the past. Fabric of Life describes working together to create practical things of beauty as a way to improve quality of life while also strengthening communities. Its year-round programming includes workshops, concerts, agricultural activities, weaving, natural dyeing, gardening, woodworking, music, and other opportunities to learn traditional skills.

That makes Barnfest a natural expression of Fabric of Life's mission. Visitors can see traditional skills in action, try some of them for themselves, meet people who practice them, and experience the social side of making, learning, and sharing knowledge.

Supporting a Local Nonprofit

Barnfest also serves as an important fundraiser for Fabric of Life. The organization notes that the event is part of its ongoing efforts to build a strong future for programs that educate both young people and adults in traditional crafts, music, dance, agriculture, and forestry. The event is made possible in part through community donations and volunteer support.

For residents of Shelburne and the surrounding Franklin County communities, Barnfest provides a chance to support a local nonprofit while enjoying a full day of activities that celebrate creativity, craftsmanship, music, agriculture, and community.
