Leverett

Leverett is neighbor to the Five College area of Amherst, Hampshire, Smith, Mt. Holyoke and the University of Massachusetts. Its diverse population of 2,000 is a rich mixture of teachers, students, farmers, lumbermen, gardeners, artists, professionals in the areas of medicine, law, and telecommunications.
Four villages comprise the town: Leverett Center, East Leverett, North Leverett and Moores Corner. The major road through town is Route 63, which connects Leverett to Amherst to the south and Montague to the north.
Leverett Historical Society, is housed in the old Moore's Corner schoolhouse on North Leverett Road.
Old Charcoal Kilns, on Old Coke Kiln Road near Moores Corner, are where charcoal was produced in abundance some 200 years ago. Accessible by taking Route 63 to North Leverett Road, then taking a right onto Old Coke Kiln Road.
Local community members completed the New England Peace Pagoda, the first of its kind in America, in 1985. It stands as a symbol of aspiration and hope for peace. The caretakers live on the property, however the public is welcome to visit the grounds and view the beautiful Pagoda, the new temple, and the gardens and lily pond.
In the center of town is the Leverett Pond, a beautiful 100+-acre lake. The pond offers fishing, boating, and swimming.
Rattlesnake Gutter, is a deep glacial ravine featuring scenic rock formations. Rattlesnake Gutter Road is a narrow roadway that travels along part of the ravine. The area may be reached by taking Montague Road from Route 63. The road is closed to vehicles but open for hiking and bicycling.
Nearby are many hiking trails on conservation area, including Rattlesnake Hill, Doolittle Brook, and Marvell Family Conservation Area, to name a few
Joy Friedman, local potter, has her own pottery store in Leverett. She has a gallery with hand-crafted items for sale and offers classes in throwing pottery.
The Leverett Village Co-op is a specialty food market selling locally-grown produce, organic beer and wine, fresh bakery items, and sandwiches.
