Whately
Whately was incorporated in 1771 and was originally part of Hatfield. It is the site of the first gin distillery in Massachusetts, as well as other mills including grist, cider, woolen, chair and coffin factories. Above all, Whately has been and continues to be an agricultural area with commercial crops including apples, cider, hay, maple products, tobacco, and vegetables.
Whately lies on the southern border of Franklin County, north of Hampshire County. Whately is bisected by Interstate 91 and is 26 miles north of Springfield and 11 miles south of Greenfield.
Whately Historial Society was founded in 1966 to preserve the town’s history and to educate townspeople and others about Whately’s past. The Society sponsors programs and activities about the history and culture of the area; maintains a museum of Whately documents, images and objects; and sells copies of the town histories.
Herlihy Park facility are available for rental and usage. It has baseball/soccer fields and a pavilion.
The Outdoors
The tri-town beach in Whately is open in the summer months for swimming and is available to local residents only. There is a sandy beach and the water is lifeguard supervised.

Whately Inn, a colonial-styled inn, offers fine dining, catering, and has guest rooms.
Muffin's General Market, a family owned business est. 2011, is focused on quality customer service and value along with a friendly atmosphere. We feature store baked muffins and pies, Boar's Head deli, daily lunch specials, local and New England products and gifts, and a notable craft beer, wine, and spirits selection.
Tom's Long Hotdogs roadside fast food, homemade chili, mac and cheese and more! It's a local favorite.
Whately Diner Award-winning and classic “Princess” style diner built in 1958 by the Kullman Company of New Jersey. It was originally located in Chicopee, MA and moved to the current location. Originally, it was known as the “Maverick.”
Fairview Farms has been owned and operated by the Sanderson family for the past nine generations, nestled in the foothills of the Berkshires in Whately, Massachusetts. Since the 1600s, the farm has undergone many changes that reflect the agriculture of the times and has evolved into the farm it is today.
