Orange

Orange is the easternmost town in Franklin County. It lies along State Route 2, which runs east towards Worcester County and west towards Berkshire County. Orange has its own municipal airport that is open to the public.

The Millers River runs through the town and was dammed in 1790, bringing in lots of industry. Orange became the site of the New Home Sewing Machine Company in the late 19th century and Grout in 1900, the first automobile factory built in the United States.

In September, the North Quabbin Garlic and Arts Festival, known as “the festival that stinks,” takes place in Orange. This “scent-sational” event is a celebration of local agriculture, art, and culture. Another popular annual event is the Orange Solstice Riverfest in June. This festival features a variety of activities at the parks but the main attraction is the boat parade on the Millers River with floating fire pits and lighted, decorated boats. In April, the River Rat Race occurs, a canoe race on the Millers River from Athol to Orange.

Orange Farmer's Market - open during the summer season.

Orange Historical Society, located at 41 North Main Street, is housed in a Victorian home and is furnished in that period. Included are a special children's room, military room and alumni room. Barn exhibits include a fire pumper, steam automobile (circa 1904) made in Orange by the Grout brothers and other industrial items.

The Outdoors

Lake Mattawa is located in Orange and is a popular spot for swimming, boating, and fishing. The lake is stocked with trout and salmon for fishing and the waters are so clear, you can see 15 feet down. There is a small, unsupervised beach for enjoying the beautiful views and a boat ramp provides access to the lake.

Trails - If you enjoy hiking, checkout the many trail systems located in Orange.  The Tully Trail is a 22-mile scenic loop trail located in the towns of Royalston, Orange, and Warwick, Massachusetts near the New Hampshire border. The route crosses several ledges with sweeping views of the surrounding rural countryside and passes three waterfalls.  There is the Orange State Forest that consist of 7,847 acres of beautiful woods to roam.

Orange Municipal Airport  was originally constructed in 1929. However it wasn’t officially activated until April of 1940.  Recent improvements to both runways and plans for future expansion will enhance our ability to provide exceptional facilities and services.
